The Incredible Dolby Atmos

Yes, Dolby Atmos has been available to the public for about 3 years now, but we have been receiving more questions and requests recently for this amazing surround sound equipment. So, what better time than now to write up a little blog piece on it, eh? When It comes to...

theater surround sound, Atmos is the most incredible system currently on the market. It has a large home theater market and at the time this blog was written, over 150 cinemas in the USA feature Dolby Atmos technology, 11 of them in Washington! Find one near you: Click Here. Dolby Atmos is still an expensive investment, most worthwhile theater room sound systems are, but you are paying for quality and innovation. Don't let that scare you away though. This is the kind of upgrade that will blow away family, friends, strangers, pets, everyone and anyone AND will have them asking for more. What sets Atmos apart from other high end sound systems is it's ability to "place" sounds in different locations of your theater room. When the system is installed, the room receives a full calibration. This allows the sound mixers to place voices and sounds into different locations, which creates a sound environment that transforms watching a movie into feeling as if you are "in" the movie. When a plane flies overhead, you actually hear it approach and fly over. When bullets fly past the character on screen, you also hear the bullets whiz past your head. It truly is an "experience". You will not be disappointed and may never again come out of your theater room.

How is an Atmos system configured, you may be asking? Thanks for the question! We are going to provide some information on speaker placement and why they need to be configured in this way. Atmos can be configured in 5.1.2, 7.1.2, 5.1.4, 7.1.4 and 9.1.2. In the 5.1.2 set-up, 5 refers to the number of surround speakers, front, center and surround. .1 refers fo the number of powered subwoofers. .2 refers to the number of in-ceiling or upward-firing speakers.

In comparison, 7.1.4 refers to 7 traditional surround speakers, .1 for the subwoofer and .4 for the number of in-ceiling or upward-firing speakers. And finally, the complete, custom home theater configuration, 9.1.2. 9 traditional surround speakers, .1 is the subwoofer and .2 in-ceiling or upward-firing speakers. Check out the example below.

Here is an example of what it would look like if you walked in to a showroom to try it out:

The 5.1.2 configuration is a step above most of the traditional home theater set-ups. 9.1.2 is the most immersive configuration and creates an intense experience that is unrivaled compared to all other available surround sound equipment. If you are going to transition to Atmos we recommend the 9.1.2 system, it is absolutely woth the time and investment. Acheiving the correct speaker placement is determined by room size, seat location and system configuration. Atmos installation is best handled by professionals, "cough" and can take multiple adjustments to perfect it. Luckily, we have experience in Atmos and can get it knocked out in no time. This concludes our little tutorial on Dolby Atmos, hopefully this information has given you a basic understanding of what Atmos is and how it would need to be set-up in your home theater. Currently, the list of Blu-Rays that take full advantage of Atmos is relatively small. But don't fret, the list is growing day by day and will no doubt become the norm over the next few years. A few examples of Dolby Atmos discs include: Gravity, American Sniper, Insurgent, Mad Max: Fury Road 3D, Pixels and Transfomers: Age of Extinction. Check out Dolby Atmos enabled films coming soon to theaters: Everest, The Martian, Pan, Hunger Games and The Jungle Book.
